Dr. Gaviria arrived in the city of Ibagué in 2018 after accumulating valuable experiences around the world in places as diverse as Bogotá, Barranquilla, San Antonio in the United States of America, Nairobi in Africa and Oman in the Middle East.
Currently, he delivers the best of his experience of more than 23 years as an ophthalmologist specializing in cornea, refractive and cataract surgery, teacher at prestigious institutions in Colombia, clinical researcher and innovator, to each of his patients.
Together with Dr. María Fernanda Pérez (Glaucoma specialist) and Dr. Paolo Solano (Oculoplastic specialist), he is the founder of Nazar Ophthalmology Group, one of the city’s most prestigious institutions, which boasts cutting-edge technology for the diagnosis and management of eye conditions. In 2025, Dr. Gaviria spearheaded the project to bring the first excimer laser to the city of Ibagué. Until then, patients with conditions such as myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, and presbyopia had to travel to other cities for treatment. Dr. Juan Guillermo Gaviria Carvajal
A graduate of Javeriana University, an ophthalmologist from the Barraquer Institute of America and a specialist in Cornea and Uveitis from the University of Texas at San Antonio in the USA.
He has worked as an instructor of cataract surgery for over 15 years at prestigious Colombian institutions such as the Barraquer Clinic, the National Ophthalmological Foundation in Bogotá, and the Caribbean Ophthalmological Clinic in Barranquilla. He served for three years as Scientific Director of the Muscat Eye Laser Center in Oman. He has experience performing cataract, refractive, and keratoconus surgery with intrastromal rings on over 10,000 eyes.
He performs advanced corneal transplant techniques, including penetrating keratoplasty, deep lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), and semilunar keratoplasty for keratoconus. In Ibagué, he performs corneal endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) for corneal damage following cataract surgery and other alterations of the corneal endothelium.
Among his achievements for our city and our country, Dr. Gaviria spearheaded a private investment initiative in 2025 to install the first excimer laser in the city of Ibagué after more than a decade without laser. Between 2020 and 2022, with the support of the Colombian Society of Ophthalmology (SCO), he led the adaptation and adoption of management guidelines for the most important diagnoses in ophthalmology. This project brought together a group of 16 specialists who worked to update and disseminate the official SCO management guidelines. He has published more than 18 articles in scientific journals and participated in numerous conferences.
